Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863. Thanksgiving was historically a religious observation to give thanks to God.^[1]

The event that Americans commonly call the first Thanksgiving was celebrated to give thanks to God for helping the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony survive their first brutal winter in New England.^[2]The first Thanksgiving feast lasted three days, providing enough food for 53 pilgrims and 90Native Americans.^[3] The feast consisted of fish (cod, eels, and bass) and shellfish (clams,lobster, and mussels), wild fowl (ducks, geese, swans, and turkey), venison, berries and fruit, vegetables (peas, pumpkin, beetroot and possibly, wild or cultivated onion), harvest grains (barley and wheat), and the Three Sisters: beans, dried Indian maize or corn, and squash.^[4][5][6][7]

Halloween (or Hallowe’en), a contraction of All-Hallows-Even (“evening”), is an annual holiday observed on October 31, and common activities include guising/trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. The practice of dressing up in costumes is perhaps the most common, and many costume ideas have moved away from the “scary” and toward the funny, creative, or otherwise engaging.

Halloween is also thought to have been heavily influenced by the Christian holy days of All Saints’ Day (also known as Hallowmas, All Hallows, Hallowtide) and All Souls’ Day.[5] Falling on November 1st and 2nd respectively, collectively they were a time for honoring the Saints and praying for the recently departed who had yet to reach heaven. By the end of the 12th century they had become days of holy obligation across Europe and involved such traditions as ringing bells for the souls in purgatory and “souling“, the custom of baking bread or soul cakes for “all crysten [christened] souls”.[6]
