<p>In the <a title="United States" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States">United States</a>, New Year’s Eve is a major social <a title="Holiday" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holiday">holiday</a>. One of the top destination cities for New Year’s Eve is New York City.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Years_Eve#cite_note-18">[19]</a></p>
<p>In the past 100 years the “<a title="Times Square Ball" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Square_Ball">ball dropping</a>” on top of <a title="One Times Square" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Times_Square">One Times Square</a> in <a title="New York, New York" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York,_New_York">New York City</a>, broadcast to all of America (and rebroadcast in many other countries), is a major component of the New Year celebration.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Years_Eve#cite_note-New_Year.27s_Eve_in_the_United_States-19">[20]</a> The 11,875-pound (5,386 kg), 12-foot (3.7 m) diameter <a title="Waterford crystal" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterford_crystal">Waterford crystal</a> ball located high above <a title="Times Square" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Times_Square">Times Square</a> is lowered, starting at 11:59:00pm and reaching the bottom of its tower 60 seconds later, at the stroke of <a title="Midnight" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight">midnight</a> (12:00:00am). This is repeated in many towns and cities across the <a title="United States" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States">United States</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Years_Eve#cite_note-New_Year.27s_Eve_in_the_United_States-19">[20]</a> From 1981 to 1988, New York City dropped an <a title="Enlarged apple (page does not exist)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Enlarged_apple&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1">enlarged apple</a> in recognition of its nickname. It is sometimes referred to as “the <a title="Big apple" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_apple">big apple</a>” like the city itself; the custom derives from the <a title="Time ball" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_ball">time signal</a> that used to be given at noon in harbors.</p>

The practice of dressing up in costumes is perhaps the most common, and many costume ideas have moved away from the &#8220;scary&#8221; and toward the funny, creative, or otherwise engaging.</p>
<p>Halloween is also thought to have been heavily influenced by the <a title="Christian" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian">Christian</a> holy days of <a title="All Saints' Day" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints%27_Day">All Saints&#8217; Day</a> (also known as <a title="Hallowmas" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallowmas">Hallowmas</a>, <a title="All Hallows" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Hallows">All Hallows</a>, Hallowtide) and <a title="All Souls' Day" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Souls%27_Day">All Souls&#8217; Day</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween#cite_note-rogers_religion-4">[5]</a> Falling on November 1st and 2nd respectively, collectively they were a time for honoring the <a title="Saints" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saints">Saints</a> and praying for the recently departed who had yet to reach heaven. By the end of the 12th century they had become days of holy obligation across Europe and involved such traditions as ringing bells for the souls in <a title="Purgatory" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purgatory">purgatory</a> and &#8220;<a title="Souling" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souling">souling</a>&#8220;, the custom of baking bread or soul cakes for &#8220;all crysten [christened] souls&#8221;.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween#cite_note-AFP-5">[6]</a></p>

<p> <strong>Labor Day</strong> is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 6 in 2010).</p>
<p>The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of <a title="United States Army" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army">the U.S. military</a> and <a title="United States Marshals Service" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Marshals_Service">U.S. Marshals</a>during the <a title="Pullman Strike" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pullman_Strike">Pullman Strike</a>, President <a title="Grover Cleveland" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grover_Cleveland">Grover Cleveland</a> put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority. Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through <a title="United States Congress" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Congress">Congress</a> unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day#cite_note-PBS-1#cite_note-PBS-1">[2]</a> The September date was chosen as Cleveland was concerned that aligning an American labor holiday with existing <a title="International Workers' Day" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Workers%27_Day">international May Day celebrations</a> would stir up negative emotions linked to the <a title="Haymarket Affair" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haymarket_Affair">Haymarket Affair</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day#cite_note-Slate-2#cite_note-Slate-2">[3]</a> All 50 <a title="U.S. state" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state">U.S. states</a> have made Labor Day a <a title="U.S. state holiday" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state_holiday">state holiday</a>.</p>
